Betting Odds of BBC Greatest Person of the 20th Century 2019

bbcTwenty years after releasing a televised poll about the most influential Britton ever, the BBC is expanding the poll to find the most influential person of the XX century. The televised poll attracted millions of viewers back in the day, and BBC Two is hoping that it will be the same now.

The BBC Greatest Person of the XX Century show will air this month in a 7-part documentary series. Each of the episodes will focus on a different category. At the same time, viewers will get the chance to vote for their own pick from a pool of 28 figures selected by distinguished academics and experts.

As we mentioned earlier, each of the episodes will focus on different categories covering all areas of life. The greatest leaders, scientists, activists, sports stars, artists, writers, and entertainers will all be featured in the episodes, with the public voting via telephone a week after each episode. The seven finalists will then square off in a special episode that will determine the winner.

According to Patrick Holland from BBC Two, 20 years is more than enough time to reflect on the greatest minds of the previous century. The BBC had this in mind when they decided to create the show. The list of 28 nominees includes major political figures such as Winston Churchill and Alfred Hitchcock, with numerous other well-known figures from other areas of life also appearing the shortlist.

The show will start on January 8, with new episodes released each week afterward. It is already attracting a lot of interest from the public and punters as well, who are intrigued by the idea of betting on the winner. Of course, online bookies have rushed to meet their demands, already offering odds for all the potential winners.

Among the many events in its offer, Ladbrokes often features specials. Of course, the upcoming BBC Two show wasn’t an opportunity to miss. You can bet on the outright winner, where Winston Churchill is leading the list with odds of 6/4 or the winner of the leaders category, where things are a tad more competitive.

The next favorite in the Outright Winner market is Nelson Mandela. The late anti-apartheid activist and former president of South Africa is quite close to Churchill with odds of 5/2. Next come Albert Einstein and Martin Luther King Jr. with odds of 10/1 before giving way to mathematician extraordinaire Alan Turing with 16/1.

Mahatma Gandhi and boxing legend Muhammad Ali are level with Turing (16/1), with suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher being available at 20/1.

The list of outsiders is long, with historical figures such as Virginia Wolfe, Franklin Roosevelt, and Marie Curie sharing odds of 100/1.

The Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher is being given odds of 20/1 to win, just like Emmeline Pankhurst. Right after all these figures is late British rock star David Bowie (33/1). We must say it’s a bit surprising to see him that high up the list, but it’s also a reminder of Bowie’s greatness.

The first person to walk on the moon Neil Armstrong is given odds of 50/1 to become the greatest person of the XX century, while all below him are considered outsiders with odds of 100/1.
